These opportunities in our Merck Research Labs (MRL) can provide you with great development and a chance to see if we are the right company for your long-term goals.   Safety Assessment and Laboratory Animals Resources (SALAR) helps advance high quality drug candidates into development by defining the non–clinical safety and selectivity of lead compounds. SALAR employees evaluate Lead Op candidates and preclinical toxicity of drug development candidates, provide mechanistic understanding of drug-induced toxicity, and assess implications for human safety.  SALAR provides collaborative research in animal model development, veterinary medical and animal care, and research facility management. As part of our global team, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career.   Intern project summary   The Summer Intern in the Investigative Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology (iDART) group would have an opportunity to understand current regulatory guidance for testing novel chemical entities; importantly, the intern will further explore various emerging novel innovative assays to predict DART risk including genomic-based approaches to explore transcriptional changes underlying normal human development and the effects of drug exposure.  The intern will learn techniques to identify novel molecular biomarkers relevant to developmental toxicity. Qualifications   Education Required: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a minimum of a BS/MS in Bioinformatics, Developmental Biology, Chemical/Bio Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, or relevant discipline Candidates must be returning to school in the Fall of 2018. Required Experience: Candidates must be available to work full-time for 9-12 weeks beginning in May or June of 2018 Preferred Experience: Minimum GPA of 3.0 Strong analytical skills and background in computational biology, genomics (Taqman PCR and microarray technology) and molecular biology Strong proficiency in Excel Experience or familiarity with bioinformatics tools (e.g., miRWalk, TargetScan, miRDB, Diana Lab, RNA22, and EMBL-EBI MicroCosm, KEGG Pathways and Biocarta Pathways) Strong verbal and written communication skills  Your role at Merck is integral to helping the world meet new breakthroughs that affect generations to come, and we’re counting on your skills and inventiveness to help make meaningful contributions to global medical advancement.
